We adopt the holistic approach to Time
Management in that people do not really manage time but manage
themselves in their use of time. This approach takes the view
that if individuals can not effectively manage their time in
a holistic manner (i.e. both inside of work and outside of work)
they won't adhere in the long term to manage time effectively
within the workplace. The key is to get individuals to try to
focus on scheduling
their priorities as opposed to prioritising their schedules.
This workshop is comprised of various individual
and group activities. Individuals first learn a fourth generation
model of preferred time management. This framework is very
useful in assisting participants separate urgent
from important tasks. Participants then individually
and later in groups separate their maintenance tasks from
productive tasks. They identify their key roles and goals
and schedule specific targets with timeframes to achieve improvements.
Having established important roles
and goals (both internal and external) participants now examine
those mitigating factors that work against the planning or
execution of desired goals. These mitigating factors are labelled
time wasters or time problems and can be individual, departmental,
organisational or external. The programme concludes with participants
individually and / or in groups committing to certain activities
and building a review and measurement mechanism to ensure
the process is ongoing.
